As the Ekiti governorship polls draw nearer, the incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi has decided to return to the classroom. This he said he is doing out of his interest to mentor the younger ones as well as provide the right type of leadership. He will start teaching at the state-owned university in October 2014. Fayemi disclosed this to reporters in Ado-Ekiti on Friday.

He said his action would also put a stop to those saying he had plans to destroy the university through increased school fees. The governor also said he intended to reduce the current N50,000 fees payable per student to the barest minimum. What made you increase the fees initially Mr Governor? Good decision though, if you get elected.

Governor Rotimi Amaechi

A press release from the office of the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi has stressed the importance of rotational governorship in the state. This is especially going to infuriate Nyesom Wike who is eyeing the Governorship seat. He explained that apart from the Ikwere ethnic nationality, any other ethnic group in the state could contest next year’s governorship election.

He spoke when the chiefs and elders of Ogu/Bolo paid him a solidarity visit in Government House, Port Harcourt. Being from Ikwerre ethnic group, Amaechi said it would be unfair for yet another Ikwerre son or daughter  to become governor of the state next year. He described those warming up for next year’s governorship election in the state as desperate politicians and called on the people to vote out the PDP. Should rotation form the basis of our politics?

Former Military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari has lambasted President Goodluck Jonathan over his recent visit to Kano State for a People's Democratic Party (PDP) rally organised barely 24hours after the Abuja bomb blast. The blast claimed 71 lives and left over 200 severely injured.

The All Progressives Congress leader, voiced his disappointment via his Facebook page and he described the president’s action as very unfortunate and unpresidential. An excerpt from post reads: “More so, other Nigerians are not happy with Jonathan over this and they've taken to the social media to scold the president. “While the country is still mourning, President Jonathan, went to Kano state to welcome former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the PDP.”

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has those opposing his political aspiration to find something else to do. He then declared that nobody can stop his ambition in 2015 if he declares for the Presidency. According to him, he has the right to be the President of Nigeria regardless of his religion and state of origin.

“We must choose the right person to lead the battle, and nobody, no one under the sun, under the United Nations Human Rights Charter can stop Bola Tinubu’s ambition. This is not an election of a vicar or bishop, not of a Muslim Imam or cleric; it is about an individual with the character, brain and capacity to govern. “Whether you are a Christian or Muslim and you are good, you will win our support" he said. Will Tinubu contest for the Presidency?

Chief Tony Onyima, who is the new Commissioner in charge of the Ministry of Information, in Anambra State, has unveiled his key policy direction. Onyima was the former managing director of the SUN Publishing Company before Willie Obiano appointed him as a commissioner. He then directed the entire staff of the Information Ministry to key in to whatever Governor Obiano has set out to achieve.

Onyima stated that in the days ahead, he will work hard to ensure that there will always be the communication component in every development effort that is executed by the government. Joe-Martins Uzodike, his predecessor alerted the new commissioner that the Anambra Broadcasting Service might lose its license to operate if it does not change its present analogue status and embrace digital broadcasting by the 31st of December this year.

APC GOVERNORS CHALLENGE JONATHAN

“We urge him to show leadership at this moment by doing whatever is within his capacity and capabilities as a President, to fish out those who were involved in this act" were the words of the All Progressives Governors led by Owelle Rochas Okorocha of Imo State. They expressed worries over the escalating security issues in the country and called on President Jonathan to wake up as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and protect Nigerians.

The wakeup call and challenge was made when they visited some of the victims of the Nyanya Motor Park bomb explosion at the National Hospital, Abuja. The governors announced they had decided to set up a trust fund to support the victims’ families. Okorocha emphasised this was not the time to apportion blame, but Nigerians irrespective of their party or religious affiliation must close ranks to ensure the safety of lives and property. So Mr President needs the governors to remind him of his duty now?

OBIANO MARKS ONE MONTH IN OFFICE

Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, while marking his one month in office, unveiled enormous new programmes and policies for months ahead. He vowed to crush all the unrepentant criminals operating in the state. Speaking in a radio/television broadcast, he outlined some of his activities for the past one month, and warned criminals and hoodlums to vacate the state or stop such acts.

“Make no mistake about this, I am determined to win this war- Anambra shall be safe".He stated that his administration will reclaim the environment from the filth and rubbish that has overtaken it. He then mentioned that he has already inaugurated a Special Committee on Agriculture to revolutionalise agriculture in Anambra State”. Sounds like a governor who might go all out but then, this is Nigeria. Blowing hot never goes out of style.

To further tighten the noose on the activities of criminals in the Anambra state, the Governor, Mr Willie Obiano has promised to provide a new gun-boat for the Nigerian Navy who are actively involved in the campaign to weed criminals out of the state. He also assured that the state government would repair all grounded naval vessels and put them back into stressing that most of the arms were smuggled into the state through the River Niger.

He spoke at the parade of a notorious suspected arms dealer Mr. Alphonsus Ngwu who is fingered for supplying arms to crime syndicates in the state. Ngwu who was paraded at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Headquarters, Awkuzu, along with a gang of four armed robbery suspects openly confessed to newsmen that he had been a gun-runner for over fifteen years. The Obiano administration pledged to achieve zero tolerance of crime in Anambra State. Can Anambra's crime rates significantly reduce?

PROSECUTOR'S ABSENCE STALLS FANI-KAYODE’S TRIAL

The absence of Mr Festus Keyamo, the prosecutor in the trial of a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has stalled the case.  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged Fani-Kayode to court on an amended 40-count charge bordering on money laundering before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Fani-Kayode’s counsel, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), therefore, asked the court for an adjournment sine the prosecuting counsel was nowhere to be found. The judge, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, expressed displeasure that the prosecutor was absent without writing a letter to the court that he would not be available. She adjourned the case till May 14 for continuation of trial. We are obviously not serious about the corruption war in Nigeria.

Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State apparently angered by President Jonathan’s accusation that he pocketed his campaign money during the 2011 presidential election, stormed the venue the president used for his rally and swept his footprints away. Jonathan had during a rally in Kano on Tuesday accused the governor of frustrating his ambition by refusing to release the money he gave him for delegates from his state.

He then lambasted the President for flying all over the country just hours after a major bomb blast in Abuja had killed many. “The man came to Kano to smear our image, but thank God, he gave me free publicity by mentioning my name over 50 times in a 15-minute address. “If I decide to contest for the Presidency, I will beg APC, APGA and Labour Party not to vote for me. I want to assure you that, with the PDP votes that I will garner, I will defeat the President hands down” the governor stated. Serious talk. What do you make of the President's trips?

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday took a swipe at Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano. He accused him (Kwankwaso) of embezzling allowances meant for Kano delegates during the 2011 PDP presidential primary and that he also refused to vote for him. Jonathan recalled that during the presidential primaries at the Eagles Square, Kwankwaso left when it became clear that he had won.

Kwankwaso, had earlier said, “I regret voting President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, as he has done nothing to move the nation forward”. He stated this at the All Progressives Congress elders meeting. Reacting to Kwankwaso’s comment however, Jonathan said “I read in the paper that the Governor of Kano state said he regretted voting for me. Let me tell my good people of Kano that Kwankwaso did not vote for me and the Vice President. 2015 is real!

A call has been made by Chief Edwin Clark for Nigerians to put all hands on deck in order to fight terrorism in the country. He also called on fellow delegates at the ongoing National Conference to contribute their feeding allowances to combat insecurity in the country. The thought is quite patriotic but counting on the delegates to do that, please do not hold your breath.

Recovering from the abduction and freedom of his son, he spoke at the CONFAB session yesterday, “The issue of my son that was kidnapped is no longer an issue compared to what has happened. What is happening now is a national issue. It is not a North or South issue. Wherever it is happening, Nigerians are being killed and under siege. Such words coming from a man who has uttered divisive statements in the past are nothing short of a miracle.

Reacting to alleged marginalisation of Muslims at the ongoing National Conference, the Vice President, Namadi Sambo has disclosed that the membership of the national conference would be reviewed. This is coming on the heels of a complaint lodged by an Islamic delegation led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar. The Muslim representatives had pointed out the imbalance between Muslims and Christians in the 492-member conference.

I want to confirm that Mr. President has directed that positive action be taken on the matter,” Sambo said at the 50th anniversary lecture of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), a body led by the Sultan. Sambo also said “Mr President has also accepted my recommendation to appoint a special adviser on Islamic affairs and we are making efforts to address the issue of grazing range and grazing reserves. Special Adviser on Islamic affairs, really? That is the solution?

"God would have made everybody Christian or Muslim if He wanted to, so nobody can Islamise Nigeria". These were the words of the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar. He said all the rumours about turning Nigeria into an Islamic nation were not only unfounded, they were also impossible. He believes any attempt to do such will be trying to play God which is impossible.

The Sultan, who is the President-General, Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI), made this known at a lecture. He stressed the need for Nigerians to set aside ethno-religious differences and be committed toward peace and development of the nation. He reinforced that no JNI action was aimed at fighting the government, any group or religion. Why would anyone think it is possible to force one religion down the throats of others in a religiously diverse nation like Nigeria?

National Publicity Secretary of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Mr. Osita Okechukwu has said the new constitution amendment bill introduced in the National Assembly has exposed the president's hidden agenda. He said the bill being sponsored by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu was not only ill timed, it was aimed to further empower the President absolutely.

The bill aims to make the President the initiator of constitution amendments, a move which he said would give the President absolute powers. He then said such is capable of scuttling the country's democracy. It also goes against the principle of separation of power and takes away checks and balances in the government. He claims they are gripped by the phobia of the 2015 election.

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola has taken a swing at President Goodluck Jonathan for giving the state a junior minister slot. He believes the position belittles Lagos bearing in mind the number of votes the President got from Lagos in the 2011 elections. He said states that didn't support the President as much as Lagos did got full ministers in his cabinet.

He made the disclosure during his 'Question and Answer' session to mark his 2500 days in office. He explained that Olusegun Aganga who was portrayed as the Lagos minister in the federal cabinet is not an indigene of the state. Musiliu Obanikoro was recently appointed Minister for State (Defence). This is coming on the heels of Fashola's comments about Jonathan spending too much time in churches instead of actually governing.

Fresh investigation into the background of Drexel Technologies; the consulting firm the Ministry of Interior contracted to handle the botched Immigration Service recruitment has revealed the company is not licensed or registered with the umbrella body of outsourcing firms in the country (HUCAPAN).

The firm is also not registered with the Ministry of Labour as it is standard practice for all human outsourcing firms to do and has not filed a tax report since 1994. Further investigations have shown that the four companies that were shortlisted as claimed by the minister before Drexel got the job were unknown to the law. Yet a minister signed and awarded the contract? A minister still in office, only in Nigeria.

The remark was made when he and some other party chiefs in Bayelsa made a courtesy visit to Governor Rotimi Amaechi in Government House, Port Harcourt.

He asked Amaechi to continue planting his roots in APC as the party was on a victory match in Bayelsa and the nation come 2015. Amaechi asked the party's national leaders to reconcile all factions in the party ahead of the 2015 polls. Can the APC do the near impossible come 2015?
