Following a petition sent to the United Nations by a group of human right coalitions, two UN special rapporteurs, Mrs Magdalena Carmona and Mrs Raquel Rolnik have criticized the Federal Government. They blamed President Jonathan for government's inability to offer effective electricity metering system. This, they said was putting unnecessary hardship on many Nigerians. Most especially affected are those living in extreme poverty in many parts of the country.

The FG handed over the power companies to private investors in November, 2013. A lot of discrepancies are present in the current billing system that is largely based on discretion. This has brought about increased impunity in the sector according to the report. The UN envoys however said the FG had not bothered to reply. SERAP's Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni urged the National Assembly to insist the Federal Government clarify all raised issues. Will power in Nigeria ever become stable?
