An Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Obafemi Awolowo University has berated the Federal Government for failing to tap into the huge potentials of bitumen. Dr Bayonile Ademodi is successfully refining bitumen into Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) which is being used on roads in Ondo state. He said the potential of bitumen is huge and could solve some of the nation's challenges, chief of which is unemployment.
He said the heavy oil from Nigeria's bitumen can be used as fuel for thermal power plants. This, he said is in high demand in China, India and Japan. The bitumen can be converted into Cold Mix Asphalt and Hot Mix Asphalt to be used for road projects instead of importing same. He then wondered why the government was politicising such an important issue. What will it take to get government to actually harness the country's potentials?
