The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said plans are in top gear to abolish flat rate electricity tariff for Nigerians. The commission insists the new owners of the GENCOs and DISCOs have no choice but to comply when it comes into effect. This is because they can be penalised as they have no government backing like PHCN did.
Currently, the 'Multi Year Tariff Order' (MYTO) being used is prepared based on opaque data supplied by PHCN. He said NERC has mandated the new owners to engage consultants in order to get specific data for all regions. He said there's no reason why the people in Lagos and Yola should pay the same rates. Good news in advance as 2017 looks the closest for it to be effected?
